I woke up today with no clue that it was October until I turned on the computer. Sad. Luckily I had prepared in advance for my September faves post and taken pics.
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer
Previously discussed here.
While I like the product, I was surprised to find myself reaching for it repeatedly in the past few weeks. My face isn't doing so well right now. I've been struggling with outbursts of acne all summer and still wake up with a new spot almost daily. My reaction is to cover up the whole thing, but a part of me wants to let the skin breathe and try to recover from whatever the heck is going on internally. So I've been using this tinted moisturizer and using the next product to spot correct.
theBalm Time Balm Foundation
I haven't mentioned this product since featuring it in one of my very first posts, here. My opinion on it remains the same and I've been using it primarily as a concealer, though there are days when I will use it as a full coverage foundation. The thing is, while it has great coverage, it's not mattifying and slides around the face by late afternoon. Still, it's nice to have the option and I like the minimalist packaging that will tell me exactly how much product is left. I use the shade Medium because my post-summer skin is too light for Light.
I'm determined to use up the whole thing but I wonder how long that will take. There's an awful lot left.
Sorry, no swatches but here's a close-up that might give you a better idea of the texture. Although I've had it for a year, the texture remains smooth and there's no change in smell, look or feel. I like using my fingers to warm up the product and applying evenly. For a lighter coverage, a traditional foundation brush also works well though it will take extra time to blend properly.
Physician's Formula Multi-Colored Pressed Powder
Look, you guys -- I hit pan! Sound the trumpets!
I like the convenience of pressed powders and I like powders that add a little extra coverage. I also like it when it comes with a mirror and a puff.
Beige isn't my exact match but it's not noticeable unless I really pile it on. A light dusting with a kabuki brush sets the makeup nicely. This has a super matte finish, though, so it will make the face look rather dimensionless and flat. But that's okay for me since I need to work on my contouring and highlighting techniques!
MAC Satin Powder Blush in Equilibrium
I picked this up at the beginning of September (see here for the haul post) and wanted to use it for a while before doing a full review. That's still coming up. For now, I'll just mention that it works more as a contouring aid than a blush that adds flush. But like I said above, I need to work on my contouring skills, and it couldn't have landed in my hands at a more timely moment. This gives me the cheekbones of...
Well, maybe not quite. But close enough for me!
Revlon Colorburst Lipstick
I'm turning into a Colorburst lunatic. I've been raving about their lipsticks and glosses for the past month to anyone who will listen. I haven't been this crazy about drugstore lippies in a long time.
I love the sleek, black quilted look.
And my favourite shade is in 065 Rosy Nude. When I wear it, it says: "I'm obviously wearing lipstick but in a shade so stealth you just know that I'm polished yet not seeking extra attention." It's smooth, has a lovely glide, and best of all, doesn't smell plasticky or funky.
Clinique Quick Eyes Cream Shadow
It says "quick eyes" -- so I had to have it. I know Clinique gets a lot of negative reviews for their eye shadows and I agree that they're way too subtle. But that's kind of what I love about it.
The packaging is also kind of "meh" but I like the convenient tube that can be carried around and the doe foot applicator that makes dabbing on the lids a breeze.
This is shade 09 Sea Shell and leaves just a whisper of pale shimmery taupe. For the colour fiends who love strong pigment and obvious sparkle and shine, this will be a major fail. But for the more shy and neutral makeup lovers like me, this is the perfect thing to dash across your lids in the morning for an extra something-something without looking like you actually did do that something. Ha!
Susanne Lang Cashmere 51 Eau De Parfum
First mentioned in this post here, I've been enjoying it more lately as the temperature turned cool and crisp. Somehow it has the exact feel of soft cashmere enveloping you against cold winds.
The official description from Susanne Lang:
As warm, luxurious and opulent as the feeling of cashmere on naked skin. Cashmere combines glowing amber, incense, and saffron with exotic spices discovered during a stroll at dusk through an indian spice market.
Lately I feel like my taste in perfumes and scents in general are changing. I was iffy on Cashmere for a long time, not totally on board with the spice aspect that hits the nose first upon first whiff. But the richness and complexity of warmer scents are starting to appeal more and more and I find myself bidding temporary farewell to fresh citrus and powdery florals. Cashmere wears wonderfully well and grows warmer and more familiar the longer I leave it on. Somehow it both comforts and defends.
Slatkin & Co. Marshmallow Fireside Candle
Speaking of comforting, though I usually don't like overly sweet scents (it comes and goes), there's something about this candle that just makes me feel all tucked in and nice when I burn it just before bedtime.
I loved toasting marshmallows by the campfire, which was the activity you do as a child just before getting tucked into your sleeping bag on a camping trip. I like mine very lightly toasted and browned on the outside and the inside all melted and gooey.
I think they got the mixture of sweet marshmallow and toasty fire just right.
Lately there's nothing I like more than falling asleep to the feel of cool autumn breeze with the lingering scent of toasted marshmallows in the air.
If you didn't already do a post, what were your September favourites?

My post is coming up on Monday. Great post! I bought the mini version of that Marshmallow candle :D I like my marshmallows exactly the same way!
ReplyDeleteGreat favorites! Love the Revlon Colorburst lipsticks. That Clinique shadow looks like such a pretty shade :)
ReplyDelete@Larie - Yay! That makes me so happy for some reason. :D
ReplyDelete@Makeup Magpie - I do find myself wishing it would show up a little bit better but a good primer might do that anyway. :)
That candle sounds awesome. Must get it! And that Cashmere perfume sounds right up my alley right now.
ReplyDeleteNice faves as always Liz!! :)
Good picks, Liz! It's true, Clinique's makeup is lame, but you're right - it's great for subtle looks! And the cream shadows are nice with fairly good wear, so nice pick :) Also, I can imagine that blush is a great shade on you! Looks so pretty in the pan, and seems like a good any season shade. Also - I agree, Color Burst lippies are pretty sweet, creamy and luxurious-feeling for a drugstore brand!
ReplyDeleteAwww, your pressed powder has a little smily face now that it's hit pan. :-)
ReplyDeleteI have that shade of Colorburst lipstick - it's a great work colour for when you want to look like you've put a face on, and the quality is great. The drugstore brands have really picked up their game with lipsticks in the last year or two.
Great post! Congratultions on hitting pan, and lol on the smiley face. It looks more like a smirk to me.
ReplyDeleteAnd I was soooo glad to see your Revlon Colorburst entry, especially for Rosy Nude, which I picked up on a whim at the supermarket today. A friend told me she's on her third tube. CRAZY TALK, right? I haven't opened it yet because I was so afraid of being disappointed, but your pictures and description have convinced me. I'm going to break it out tomorrow. :)
Meanwhile, that Clinique 09 Sea Shell sounds like a color right up my alley. I'll have to check it out.
This post reminds me how much I want to try Revlon colorburst!! Drugstore makeup is so much more expensive in the city so I haven't had the chance to try it yet.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of much better than toasting marshmallows and pulling off the crispy outer shell. YUM! Your post reminded me to light a candle now that the weather's cool =)
I like your favorites Liz! I can't believe I still haven't tried Revlon Colorburst yet...I must go check out Rosy Nude! And your marshmallow candle has got me wanting some actual toasted marshmallows! =P
ReplyDelete@Tracy - I think you would like - please do it! :D
ReplyDelete@Toya - Thanks for the validation on the Clinique shadow! I was a little afraid that now people are going to try it and be like "Hmmmmmmmmmm!!!" lol
@Dee - Haha, nice catch! :) I haven't gotten around to trying out other drugstore lipsticks yet, but this brand called Marcelle in Canada has some pretty awesome affordable lipsticks.
@Zuzu - What a happy coincidence! Yes, do try and let me know how that goes! I think you'll like it. :) If I finish this or lose it today, I would go out and buy another!
@Dovey - Whereabouts are you located? And pulling off the shell of the roasted marshmallow - SHIVERS! I love that part so much. :)
@Stacey - I thought of toasting over the stove but I don't actually have marshmallows in the house, lol! I think I'll just light the candle again. :)
Such a great post Liz, that Balm foundation looks like it will be in your life for a while yet..hang in there! And now I feel the need to smell that candle :)
ReplyDeleteI have that exact same Revlon lipstick and I love it too. There's a soft seductive quality to it. I liken it to Nars' Dolce Vita (an absolute classic), it looks good on everyone giving you that sophisticated blush on your lips (if lips could blush). I would say that it's that just kissed look, but it's not as lurid as that, it's more subdued. To continue with my ill fated description I top it with Orgasm lipgloss and call it a day. That is to say a peachy lipgloss with some gold flecks strewn about. It's a gorgeous, if somewhat oversexed, look. OK, I'm done....
ReplyDeleteYour picks look absolutely perfect for a Fall selection! And that blush -- I love that colour; it seems to be a deep neutral, but not so brown that it'll come off looking like dirt on one's face. I would love to see that one swatched! As to your skin, perhaps if you look into increasing your intake of Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids, you could potentially stave off any more new breakouts? It could be stress that's adding to the issue....maybe a trip to a spa should be looked at!
ReplyDelete@Tracy D - It's worth a sniff the next time you pass by B&BW! I realized this week that the foundation isn't a good colour match when I get paler, but we'll see if there's a way to put it to good use...!
ReplyDelete@D - Hahaha, you crack me up. Go ahead and reveal all your beauty secrets, I don't mind! I gave my NARS Orgasm to my sister as I don't bother with layering my lippies and it looks horrible on me on its own. But NARS Dolce Vita - yes, that will probably end up in my stash some day. :)
@Eugenia - Spa sounds amazing to me right now; it's been a while since my last visit! And Omega fatty acids what?? lol I'm terrible at nutrition -- and you're right, it's probably a big part of the breakouts. I've been thinking of my health in general lately and know there needs to be some changes and adjustments, but it's so difficult to (a) begin, and (b) stick to it. I'm going to do another post on anti-acne products and get into it some more. And as for the MAC blush, I'll try my best to get a good swatch soon!
Oh, I have about $3 on a B&BW gift card, so I'm taking that as a sign that I need to get that candle!
ReplyDeleteI've heard really great things about those Revlon Colorburst lipsticks, and Rosy Nude sounds gorgeous. However, if there's anyone that REALLY needs to be on a lippie ban, that person is probably me.
Yay for signs! lol
ReplyDeleteWe should all take a weekend and count a tally of our makeup. I would LOVE to know how many lippies everyone has! I'm hovering near 50 and know it's multiplied exponentially instead of being reduced as it was supposed to. :/
