The Three Muskateers of Team Anti-Acne

I think I managed to find one of the things (if not the major thing) that was causing my acne grief this past season. But first, here are the outstanding three soldiers that work very well together, though not separately, which is why I dubbed them The Three Muskateers.

(Speaking of: there's a new movie coming out. Sign me up for swashbuckling campy swordfest! Terrible script, but it looks like the action sequences might make up for it. The thing is, I think Dumas would freaking love this movie. Yeah, I said it.)

ANYWAY. Here are my muskateers:

None of the three are new. In fact, the DDF Glycolic 10% Toning Complex is nearly empty, the Murad Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel is half empty, and even the Murad Acne Spot Treatment is about a third or quarter down. I've been using them all separately or in combination of two, but not until recently did I regularly use all three at the same time. Together, they zapped almost all of my problematic acne issues. Amazing!!!

And the culprit? Behold the skincare equivalent of the evil Milady de Winter:

My heart? Broken. If you've been reading this blog for a while, there were several occasions I raved about this Shiseido Extra Smooth Sun Protection Cream. It seemed so amazing. It kept me from burning, it felt great on the skin, and it even acts as a fantastic primer. But I think it was making my skin crazy for some reason. I don't know what it is about it. And I can't say that they didn't warn me! "Discontinue use if signs of irritation appear." But then, all products say that. How was I to know?

As mentioned before, I break out every summer no matter what. I didn't even wear sunscreen all that much last last summer and still broke out, so I can't blame Milady for everything. But this past season was definitely her fault. I wish I hadn't tossed the insert with more information.

I had had a sneaking suspicion about this all season but never took the time to consciously think about it. It wasn't unusual for me to break out like crazy during the hot months. And we're supposed to wear sunscreen diligently and blahblahblaaaaaaaaaaah. Ugh. The thought of looking for a new holy grail sunscreen is exhausting. Anyhow, once I eliminated this bad gal from my routine, I noticed the breakouts stopped immediately.

Then one night, it finally occurred to me to use the Muskateers together as a team. It didn't seem to matter which cleanser I used, so long as I removed the makeup thoroughly. My face was swollen and scattered with sensitive bumps, so I avoided physical exfoliation. Instead, toning was a crucial step in clearing away whatever makeup the cleanser could not remove.

I was recommended this toner a long time ago while looking for ways to reduce the appearance of acne scars. I could never use it properly for a long duration because new breakouts were inevitable and I'd have to abandon this to zap the new acne first. The thing about this toner is it's supposed to help reduce wrinkle lines, which is fine since I am in my 30s and having to worry about another thing on top of the usual problem is par for the course.

Did you note the bit about the AHA and sun sensitivity? I just kind of have to laugh at this point.

After toning, I wait a few minutes and apply the Murad Acne Exfoliating Gel.

Now, I have heard good things about the Murad anti-acne line but have so many products to go through that I could not justify the purchase of the entire collection. I figured the exfoliating gel and spot treatment were good enough. On some better days, using this gel alone after cleansing was good enough to keep the horrible red bumps at bay.

Sometimes I woke up with a glowy face. In the summer it was useless alone.

The Murad Spot Treatment, likewise, was useless alone. I dabbed triple the usual amount over angry red spots. I used a thin layer all over my face. Does not work without the aid of its brothers, the toner and exfoliating gel.

I thought about returning this one countless times. If there's one product that I expect to work right away, it's the spot treatment.

I was utterly amazed when this actually worked overnight in combination with the other two products.

As you can see, there's our friend sulfur again.

So what I'm left to deduce is: 10% Glycolic + 1% Saliclyic Acid + 3% Sulphur = clear skin???

And correct me if I'm wrong, but all three of these guys are going to cause sun sensitivity and now I need to be more vigilant about wearing sun protection than ever before? L-O-L.

My temporary solution is to use these three only at night and rely on The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil line in the morning (review coming up). Also, I still plan on trying to develop a more healthy lifestyle. It's going to take a while to come up with a routine that I can stick to, but I've gotta work on it or else I'll be turning into a complete hermit come winter.

In any case, I'm so glad to find temporary relief from acne hell that I want to throw on a cape, put on a sword and go out and get riproaringly drunk. (There goes healthy living?)

A part of me still thinks having to use three products on top of cleanser and moisturizer is ridiculous. But that's what works at the moment. And what's really amazing is that the solution was within my reach all along. I didn't have to buy anything new.

Have you ever discovered an amazing combination of products within your own stash? Do you like Dumas and The Three Muskateers? Who wants to throw on a cape and celebrate with me???

  1. I'm glad you've found your 'three muskateers.'

Murad is a great brand and I do love their acne products too, however the Exfoliating Gel freaks me out a bit. I've got two (?!) bottles of it, but whenever I've applied it onto my face, it just starts to sting so-so bad and I end up getting paranoid and wiping it off! It just feels SO strong. Perhaps I should be braver...

The Body Shop's Tea Tree range is great too - looking forward to reading your review. I've had quite good results with TBS and rate their night lotion (the tea tree one) very highly. My acne scars faded when I used to use it... Note to self: must repurchase!

And re sun protections - I know I should use them but I don't and never have. I'm very pale and know it's important and blah blah blah, but there's something about them (probably the fact most are quite greasy) that puts me off. On my body - yes, I use sunscreen lotions, on my face - nope.
I'm glad you've stopped using the Shiseido one and that the 'three muskateers' are doing their job (brilliantly). I have broken out/had scary rashes after using various skincare products (I should stick to what works but I don't...), so know how annoying it can be.

    xoxo

  2. I have found similar products in the Paula's Choice line that are working fairly well for me, but not GREAT. Maybe the problem is that I'm not diligently using my toner enough..it always seems to be the one product I let slide. I haven't had any huge issues with breakouts (knock wood) but I just feel like my skin could be better. On the sunscreen front, I used Kiehl's brand this year and had no issues with it, I'm sure they'd give you a sample to try :)

  3. Haha, I totally know what you mean about the new movie - it looks like a train wreck waiting to happen, and yet the action and bosoms would probably have made Dumas very happy ;)

I have been wanting to try the Murad for a while - glad to see it works, at least in tandem with other things. I can't imagine the sunscreen search...ugh. I use Clinique's city block, and have for years - I think that one is mostly titanium oxide. I make S. use neutrogena men, but my mom used to use the normal one for years. People also say great things about Kate Somerville...gah, I dunno! Good luck with the search!

  4. @Miss A - Hey, thanks for commenting! I have noticed that you and I have similar skin issues and tend to have same assessments of certain products. The Body Shop Tea Tree stuff was a mini kit and the only thing it didn't contain was the night moisturizer! Dammit. I hear it apparently reduced scarring but didn't quite believe it at the time. Now I'll have to go back for it!

Now, the Murad gel didn't sting but the DDF toner did. So if you are curious about it, beware!

@Tracy D - If you don't have breakouts, I'd say that's great! As for toners, it's not necessary if you don't wear a lot of foundation. I do so it's crucial that I always tone. My skin also likes the extra exfoliation. I'll definitely check out Kiehl's, thanks!

@Larie - Glad you agree re: Dumas! Drives me nuts when people talk about him like Shakespeare! I tried a bit of the Clinique stuff on the back of my hand but wasn't sure if I liked the finish. I think I'll take Tracy's advice above and try Kiehl's next.

  5. Give three cheers (and one cheer more, lol)!! I'm so happy you a) found the culprit, or at least one of the main offenders and b) found something to help soothe and/or erase said culprit's tracks! I'm really, really glad that you're not giving up on the most important fact: tweaking your lifestyle and/or habits; I bet you'll find that once you make some minor adjustments, that not only will your breakouts be significantly reduced, but maybe the muskateers just might hang up their capes...for good! Whether Dumas likes it, or not! Touché !!!

  7. I want to throw on a cape and celebrate with you, but then again I am always ready to throw on a cape. Liz do we get to wear the boots and the hat too? I really want to wear the hat, I have had a thing for hats lately.

I'm with Eugenia, once you find the right balance your face will be at peace. It's probably stress from school and work and all of life's other demands that stress out your skin. As well as diet and other factors. You'll be rid of those buggers just yet.

  8. I absolutely love Murad's Exfoliating Acne Treatment Gel! And it does sting when my skin is feeling a little sensitive, but this stuff has done wonders for my skin.

  9. Several months ago I realized that chemical sunscreens break me out (with cystic acne!!). I had really bad skin for a while, but when I stopped using products containing sunscreen, my skin cleared up drastically! It's a bit ironic since it's supposed to be good for you. Cosmetic companies like to throw it in everything from moisturizers to foundation, so it's really hard to avoid. I think it's why it took me so long to realize sunscreen was the problem. I also noticed that when I used higher SPF sunscreens the problem worsens. Perhaps you could have a similar issue with chemical sunscreen? I think it's not that uncommon of a problem. If you want to continue to protect your skin against sun, you can look into "physical" sun blockers as opposed to chemical blockers. It looks like your Shiseido is full of chemical block. I've heard that clinique has sunscreen with physical blockers (ie titanium dioxide).

  10. @Eugenia - Thanks, friend! And yes, I really need to get on that. My bad skin was fuel for motivation for a while but now I need something else to give me a kick. I was hoping to come up with a plan of action this weekend but no luck yet. Soon!

@Frances - Thanks so much! I'll check it out. :)

@D - Woohoo! Definitely boots and a hat just for you. ;) (Hats and I don't mix well.) Everybody has stress but I don't understand why my stress needs to manifest specifically as blemishes. It just adds more stress! And I'm not even as stressed as I used to be a few years ago. Weird, weird, weird.

@Mary - Hey, glad to get your feedback on it! It has me wondering how well the similar looking Acne & Wrinkle Reducer will work. I might try that next after this gel runs out.

@Dovey - Hi and thanks for the great comment! I did check out a few physical blocks and didn't quite like the finish when I tested them on my hands. I didn't have a particular problem with chemical blocks in the past -- the Aveeno I think was fine this summer while Shiseido was problematic. I guess, to be on the safe side, I better check out the physical blocks and really sample everything before purchasing full sizes. (That's a hard rule to stick to for some reason.) What do you use now?

  11. Hey, you should look into MAC's Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF 50. I have sensitive, oily skin, and this is the only primer/sunscreen I will use on my face. It's seriously such an underrated product, but it's PHENOMENAL. I can't rave about it enough. Moreover, it's the only product that will keep my skin matte for over 8 hours. It's non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic. It's $36.50, and you can return or exchange with MAC within 30 days if you're unhappy with it in any way. :)

Also, Neostrata is fantastic if you like glycolic acid products! When I worked at Shoppers, I saw people's skin completely transform after using Neostrata. They would come back in every three months, like clockwork, to grab their Neostrata.

  12. Thanks for the recs, Denise! I made a note of MAC Prep & Prime when Mary featured it the other day. It sounds amazing. I'll definitely test it out and use it next summer if it works out! As for Neostrata, funny you should mention. I've been wondering about that brand lately although I never gave them a glance in the past. I'm working through some products to finish first but will also check them out after!

  13. Glad you figured it out!
Sunscreens break me out as well (and I have dry skin), including the MAC Prep&Prime. Not sure if it's the sunscreen in it, or the silicone though.
One that doesn't break me out is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Sunblock.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I have heard that Neutrogena one was good and kept waiting for it to go on sale, but it's ridiculously priced for a drugstore product!

  15. I'm glad you found a regime that works, Liz! I understand your hesitation about using so many products, but I think that if you're able to do so and it's improving your skin, not worsening it, then ya gotta do what ya gotta do! I've cut way back on the amount of products I use, but at one time I'm sure I was getting into excessive steps in my routine. When my skin got wacky, I had to scale it back. I sorta miss the nighttime routine though :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ugh, I hate the night routine! (I'm such a lazy bum.) I'd love for someone to come up with one miracle product that would do it all. But you're right - gotta do what we gotta do. Now that things have improved slightly, no way I'm going to take any more silly risks!

  17. hahah I love your nickname for this trio :) My magic combination of skincare products is probably more like an army...I've tried a lot of different things.

Glad to hear this worked for you! Hope you can figure out an spf solution soon.

  18. Thanks, MM! I should go through your old posts and see what those faves are. :)

  19. Hi Liz!

Just read your comment. I think low levels of chemical block can be ok if you're not too sensitive. I find the higher SPFs are worse for me. But we're all different =P. I'm ashamed to say I don't use sunblock now, other than the low levels in the Chanel foundation I sometimes wear. That said, I spend most time indoors. My aunt who has the same allergy uses clinique, so next summer I'll probably check them out.

  20. Thanks for responding, Dovey! I wonder if I'm the same way -- SPF 30 was as high as I got until this past year. And now that primers and foundations comeo equipped with SPF, I also don't bother with separate sunscreen in the winter. Sounds like Clinique's good based on everyone's recommendations. I'll be checking that out along with the Kiehl's soon. :)

  21. I love the nickname and the muskateers! All for one...!
Do these also help with oiliness? And stragely enough, I am finding that when using skincare for sensitive, dry or dehydrated skin instead those for oily or combination, I get way less acne. The problem is the increased oiliness though. Meh, I wish I didn't have to choose between breaking out and being greasy.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh, that's easy for me: I don't care about being oily as long as I don't break out!

I personally don't believe anything (any product) will stop oiliness aside from some sort of very gradual acclimatization. I didn't see a reduction in oil production but I have figured out that it's the glycolic acid that helps with the acne. The sulfur/salicylic acid work as well but their effect seems temporary.

Lately I've been using gentle formula without fragrance, preservatives and alcohol but am still experiencing breakouts. And now anything with high acid content makes my face sting. Gah.

  23. Hi Liz,
I'm an italian follower, from Milan, currently living and working in Swiss, Geneva area.

I'd like to ask you if you ever tried Dr.Hauschka products for your oily skin problem, the same as I have as it drives me crazy!.
If yes, what's your review and opinion ?

I'd like to try but I won't mind to have your opinion first :)

    Thanks
    Ciao Ciao

    1. Hi, Cris!

I'm sorry but I have not tried Dr. Hauschka's products for face. At one point, I thought of trying the "balancing oil" which is supposed to help regulate oil production but heard from a fellow blogger that the oil is rather weighty and probably not recommended. I'm not very familiar with Dr. H products at all. :(

However, if you struggle with breakouts and acne, I highly recommend La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo to use morning and night! It has been working wonders for my skin this summer.

For primer, Hourglass Veil Mineral is wonderful at keeping my skin matte underneath foundations.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful! Do let me know if you end up with good results with Dr. Hauschka. :)

  24. Hi Liz,
    thanks for your message.
I heard a lot about this Hourglass primer and I'd like to try it but this brand is not yet sold neither in Italy or in Swiss.
I should buy it on line and get it delivered here but that means struggling with customs, most of the times is as painful as struggling with oily skin ;)
I will surf the web looking for an e-shop with deliveries ex Europe only, probably there's something in the UK.
    Thanks a lot!
