I put myself on a ban from all new lippies until I finish at least five from my stash. For those who might be wondering how it's going... you can stop shedding sympathetic tears; it's not that bad right now! A few products are at the halfway point or even lower. I'm feeling good. There have been instances in which I broke bans in less than 24 hours, and the urges to cave tend to come over me suddenly and powerfully. But so far I haven't felt any temptations or cravings for new things. I am on full alert for that twitchy feeling and determined to shut. it. down. at the first opportunity. (Method of "shutting it down" to be developed.)
In an effort to stave off some of the cravings for new autumn collections, I rummaged through my stash to see what sort of season-appropriate lippies have been neglected. Six glosses, two tinted balms and one scary lipstick.
My lips are super dry so I love a good tinted lip balm. The two plum/berry shades I have are Fresh Sugar Plum Tinted Lip Treatment and Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm (Red Dhalia). Both moisturize, add a wash of colour and are easy to carry around in pockets or purses.
I like them both very much.
Red Dhalia provides a wash of sheer red and Fresh Plum is a layerable plum that can go from sheer to semi-opaque.
Ranked after tinted balms, my chapped lips prefer glosses over lipstick. From left to right below are: By Terry Laque de Rose in Devil Rose, Revlon Colorburst in Bordeaux, Revlon Colorburst in Sienna Sparkle, LORAC Tie Dye for Gloss in Berry Blender, Lancome Juicy Tubes in Beach Plum and MAC Lip Gelee in Moistly.
The By Terry gloss is an interesting colour. I don't buy lippies that are far from the natural colour of lips but figured this was sheer enough not to look completely unnatural. It's the only true purple lippie in my stash.
Sorry for the lack of actual lip swatches but they turned out to be a mess. Here's a close-up of the By Terry:
This is MAC Moistly. I love this one so much. (It's nearly finished!!!) As you know, the MAC Lip Gelees are quite sheer. This gives me a perfect light layer of reddish gloss that adds a healthy glow to my face right away.
Lancome Beach Plum is a much more pigmented plum creme. I love the colour but usually prefer something more sheer, so this doesn't get a lot of play. Hopefully that changes in the next few weeks.
The LORAC Tie Dye set was last year's holiday bargain. I didn't expect to like this shade very much but it's looking very appealing right now.
The pink, purple and silvery white mix together to create a delicious shimmery berry shade. Berry Blender is a pretty accurate name.
Revlon Sienna Sparkle is a pretty brownish shade with subtle gold shimmer. Perfect for the season.
Bordeaux is much scarier. The hint of shimmer in the tube does not show up on the lips. The vivid dark berry creme is perfect for a dramatic polished look with clean black liquid liner and winter pale skin.
And now my only vampy lipstick: NARS Fast Ride.
It's described as "sheer mulberry" and that is what you see on a swatch on paper or the back of your hand.
However, on the lips, it is much darker and 2-3 swipes will give you a colour closer to the tube than the swatch.
So, I have a lot of stuff to work with all autumn/winter long. Here's to staying strong and not caving to new stuff!
How do you feel about berry lips or changing shades according to season? Yay?

Great fall shades! The Lorac tie dye gloss looks so pretty. I think it's nice to change for the season. During the summer I'm mostly into peachy-pink & golden-corals but during the autumn my berry & bronzey shades definitely get more use! :)
ReplyDeleteI love your paper shot :D I should dig out my lippies...but I don't think I have that many, really!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm terrified of being proven wrong :P
ReplyDelete@Makeup Magpie - I think those colours would look lovely on you! :)
ReplyDelete@Larie - Much more artistic than the regular arm swatch, right? lol COUNT, COUNT, COUNT!
Great lipstick collection! I have been dying to try Fresh Sugar Lip Treatments. Hoping to pick one up during Sephora's F&F soon.
ReplyDeletelol @ the paper shot haha i love the squigglies lol theres so many dark colors O_O i usually shy away from those colors cuz I find them to be a little too vampy xD but i do have moistly since its on the sheerer side and i do love it haha its good to hear that you're doing well on your ban :)) im pretty close to my first empties post lol im trying to finish up a concealer before i get there though ^^
ReplyDeleteNice little collection of fall colours!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd good for you for staying strong. You go girl!
I love, love, love Fresh's Sugar Plum (very tempted to get the new one in Passion) and Nars Fast Ride. :D
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that MAC discontinued the Lip Gelees, but Cremesheen Glass is a fantastic substitute (with zero stickiness!). :)
I hope you use up all your lippies in time for the holiday collections...!
@Kristie - Hope you do! The original is one of the best lip balms ever. Pity it's so small and expensive, though. (Aren't they all?!?!)
ReplyDelete@Isabella - Hurray! I'm so proud of you! ^^ Can't wait to see it!
@Tracy - Thanks!!!
@Denise - I didn't know Lip Gelees got discontinued! I hate when they do that. :( But thanks for the info on Cremesheen -- I haven't tried them yet. Hopefully I can play with them sometime in the next decade, lol.
Fresh's Sugar Plum looks beautiful in the swatch! And I'm very intrigued by the swirls in Berry Blender hahahah!
ReplyDeleteI need to go on a lippie ban now. But those new tinted lipbalms from Revlon look so tempting, it's lucky I haven't seen them at my local drugstores yet.
Oof berry/plumy shades are definitely not my thing. The boldest I can go is a fire truck red or slightly wine-ish red. I kinda want to try Bordeaux though..
ReplyDeleteLiz, you gorgeous creature, you've made me want to rummage through my bootie for autumnal colors. I've made a similar resolution, although I have bought a few lip products, but not so much that I need to chastise myself.
ReplyDeleteI think lip products have always been my kryptonite. But I rationally shifted to nail and powder products as they last longer. And now I'm trying to make my way through it. You inspire me to make my keep on truckin'.
Really nice collection of autumn shades! Strange I'm saying that seeing as we're slowly heading towards our southern summer. :)
ReplyDelete@Makeup Morsels - Ummm... what?! New tinted lip balms from Revlon?? I haven't seen any yet but am intrigued! Uh oh.
ReplyDelete@Ashley - Fire truck red sounds scary to me! I have a red Revlon Colorburst that I tested a few times last year. Gotta pull that out again and be braver. *deep breath*
@D - You should rummage! There are so many things I forget about. Rediscovering good products is *almost* as good as something brand new and fresh. ;) And yes, I also shifted from lip products to nail polish. Now every time I light a candle in my room, I'm afraid of the flammability of the nail polish stash. lol Let's keep on truckin' together!
@Vita - Oh, lucky you! I miss summer so much. Maybe you can slip in a few vampy shades before it gets too hot. :)
Wow you've got a great stash to choose from, I love the LORAC & how pretty it looks in the tube too! Stay strong girl..
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tracy! It's too bad the Tie Dye stuff was limited ed. I noticed Sephora has a great new LORAC gloss set (like 5 for USD$25) -- darn my ban! lol
ReplyDeleteLove the Lorac and I seem to be drawn to the Lancome as well. NARS' Fast Ride threw me at first; when I first saw it in the store, I immediately dismissed it - I have several dark vampy shades which I've never actually worn, so I didn't want to be adding to that pile. And yet, I felt compelled to swatch it at the counter - I'm glad I did as it's sheerness (compared to what you see in the tube), was a welcome surprise! You've reminded me to go and dig it out of storage and give that lipstick, as well as probably everything else I've collected, another look-see! Thanks, my friend! Love your little squiggles...they're the cutest!
ReplyDeleteGlad to be of service! I would love to rummage through your collection some day -- bet it's a fantastic treasure trove! Weirdly, Fast Ride is my only NARS lipstick. I think it was purchased because I mistakenly thought it was a limited edition. But I agree, it's unique in how unexpectedly sheer it is while remaining buildable. I need to give it more love.
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm delighted to read that two of my personal favourites - an oldie (MAC Moistly) and a new love (Revlon Sienna Sparkle) are in this round up. I agree, they are just beautiful for the fall season!
ReplyDeleteI also really love the Revlon Matte line, especially some of the darker colors and I think the finish is perfect for fall. Check out "In The Red" if you can (some great reviews on Makeupalley) - it's really buildable and with a layer of lipbalm, looks like a stain but it's also really pigmented. Very 40's/50's.
I'm still reeling over the fact that MAC Moistly is discontinued!
ReplyDelete"In The Red" sounds lovely but my lips abhor anything even slightly matte. I do love Revlon's Colorburst lipsticks though. :)
I love your collection. How did I ever miss MAC Moistly?! When you establish a shut-down methodology please do tell!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Zuzu! I did go into Sephora today and didn't cave to all the new wonderful new bargain sets, so I'm doing SOMETHING right.
ReplyDeleteI love ALL of these colors!! Unfortunately, I find that with more 'tan' skin, shall we say, a darker lip isn't as flattering on me as it would be someone fairer. Just a preference I guess! But nonetheless I admire these shades from afar, and can live vicariously through others. I think all these shades are stellar and hence will help you keep your ban full-on :) Give 'er!
ReplyDeleteOh, NO WAY. I can totally picture you rocking something like Beach Plum and Bordeaux!!! I get what you mean, though. I'm still trying to make red lips work and convinced it looks awful every time.
