Nirvana was but a distant dream. It was the first polish I went running for as soon as the Dior Rock Your Nails collection hit the Canadian stores. It was also the first shade to sell out, as I couldn't find it anywhere. I came home with Underground and Blue Label instead.
When I can't get a product I really want, sometimes I feel just plain relief. This beauty addiction is a hard master and I am but an exhausted slave! And after a while, I forget about the product and move on with my life -- and other new products. Now, I can't say that I thought of Nirvana constantly or even regularly, but whenever I caught a reference to the shade or the collection, I'd feel a tiny hole in my shoebox full of nail polish where Nirvana surely belonged.
Lucky for me, the shade wasn't that popular in Asia? I saw it in abundance at both Singapore malls and Tokyo duty-frees. I don't have a lot of teals, and this one sits perfectly balanced between green and blue. It should be gorgeous on every skin tone. It's a Dior creme, which pretty much guarantees its classic status and secures my love for eternity.
I received another round of compliments on my nails, and one was from a 60 year-old male insolvency lawyer in the elevator. He held out his fingers in front of me and did a little wave. I just about fell over laughing. Little moments like that make my day.
However, I'm sad to report that there's been some major tip wear after only three days in. The first sign of tip wear began on the second day. I don't know if it was my application skill (still don't know how to "cap" the tips) or if Asian formulation is different/worse. It's not to the point that anyone's even going to notice, but I noticed and it's bothering me. I still don't regret getting it, but it's slightly disappointing.
How do you react when you encounter a product you missed out on the first time around?

I rarely wear blues (or greens, or teals) on my nails, but this shade is really lovely.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely one of those people who goes a little crazy around limited edition things - most especially if I missed it the first time around and get a second chance!
I don't wear bright blues or greens on my nails either, so this was a great compromise between light/dark and blue/green!
DeleteI also become a bit crazed and it's not until after the fact that I can get a grip, lol.
First of all, Yay for finally adding this beauty to your collection! Secondly, I forgot how stunning it it, and your excellent swatches have given me the urge to pull out my bottle and give it another go! - so thank for that! I didn't experience any tip wear when I wore it - for 7 days straight! It may be the formula on yours, or possibly either your base/top coats. I don't remember which base coat I used, but the Dior top coat is pretty amazing! Anyway, congrats on fulfilling this lost love!
ReplyDeleteThe base/top coats worked fine with little ol' Sally Hansen last week, so I'm inclined to think it's the formula. Bummer.
DeleteEugenia, I'd love to know what your very favourite shades are that you wear when you're not busy with swatches and reviews! Perhaps a future post? :)
If I can't find something that's LE I'm like you-wasn't meant to be and I move on.
ReplyDeleteThis is a pretty colour on you! I'm glad you got finally got one. :)
Yeah, I rarely even take that step to ask SAs to call around for locations or order online. If I see it, I grab it. If I don't, oh well!
DeleteOooooh, gorgeous colour! And it's actually not as bright as it looks in the promo pics! It reminds me of Illamasqua's Muse. :)
ReplyDeleteIf I encountered a product that I missed out on the first time, I would firstly get SUPER EXCITED (racing heart, sweaty palms, etc.) and then bust out my wallet and SNATCH THAT BABY UP.
I kind of wish that it was just a touch brighter, but the slightly muted tone probably works best for every day anyway.
DeleteI can't imagine that you miss out on much. Gotta get the sucker that escaped your grasp the first time!
aww that's pretty~~ you make me want to try dior polishes lol and as for missing something i really want, i start hunting it down. it consumes me >_< it's a disease xDD lol
ReplyDeleteIs that just for beauty products or all aspects of your life? It's not a bad trait to have. ;)
DeleteYou know, I meant to tell you - Nirvana is on Sephora's website right now (at least, the US one, not sure if the Canadian one is different). Teals don't really appeal to me (not sure why), so I'm not really tempted, but I am curious to see if maybe it's a formulation issue between countries of distribution.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow. For me, if it's LE and I miss it, then it wasn't meant to be ;) I usually don't lose sleep over these things. I'm a no regrets kinda gal!
Get this: the Canadian Sephora site is just a big FAQ and we get redirected to the US site to make purchases. Not sure what the point of the Cdn site is.
DeleteThanks for the heads up on the Dior shades on there! And yeah, no regrets! I have only a select few when it comes to makeup. ;)
I feel relieved when products I want sell out (like MAC flamingo). What you said about no longer being a slave to it is so true!!!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Nirvana is in reference to reaching nirvana or the band. Any insights?
Ah, kindred spirit! There you are. :)
DeleteBased on the names of the other polishes and the collection, I feel like it has more of the rock music association than spiritual nirvana, but it doesn't really jive in any specific way to me. I did wonder briefly about it at the time. I have a vague, hazy idea of what a spiritual nirvana nail polish might look like and this isn't it. :)
Haha, well according to Benefit nirvana--- I mean Hervana is a orchid blossom blush :P
DeleteLOVE this shade! I think I saw a Revlon dupe the other day, I'll probably go pick that one up instead :p.
ReplyDeleteI got so frustrated with Revlon last year that I gave them all away and never picked up another again. But now they seem to be all the rage?
DeleteOoOo I just got this one, Liz! It's still for sale on the US Dior website, and Chanel stocks pretty well online too, so let me know, PLEEZ, if there is anything you have a serious jones for.
ReplyDeleteI haven't used Nirvana yet, but I'll report back about the tipwear. I love the color too!
I did see you mention it somewhere! And I was so jealous at the time, lol.
DeleteIt's weird but I rarely look at the official Dior/Chanel websites. Thanks, Carrie, you are the best! :)
That reminds me, I got Pink Kimono at the same time, and it wore very, very well. Better than most anything I've tried, actually! It's one helluva happy color, such a pretty cool pink.
DeleteI just looked it up and it's one of those pinks that would look horrid with my yellowy skin. But I bet it looks fabulous on your fair hands!
DeleteIt usually takes me a while to get over something I can't get my hands on, but generally with makeup I know I can replace it with something else. You and Larie are making me want all these Dior lacquers!
ReplyDeleteI think Larie might agree with me that you should give them a try soon! ;)
DeleteI'm liking the vibrancy of this shade. Tired of those dark winter nails. If I encounter a product that I previously missed out on and I'm still coveting it then I'm usually elated but my covets are usually short lived lol.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, usually I love going super dark for winter nails but this season I'm not feeling that. Nirvana is kind of the perfect modern neutral - not too bright and not too dark.
DeleteShort-lived covets! Oh, teach me the way! lol
What a gorgeous shade, even if it doesn't wear all that well it's still worth it!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Monika. It's the first disappointing nail polish from Dior. I'll have to give it a second try to know for sure, but it feels like the formula's different from the usual.
DeleteOh that would have made my day too, little ol' fellas just being a bit fun and slightly silly. I also wonder if the Asian formulas are different from ours. It seems a little silly for them to make it extra chippy. They're paying just as much anyway.
ReplyDeleteOh, but they're paying MORE. Dior's marked up by maybe 15-20%? Double the shame, if that's the case.
DeleteWow, that's just insane. I wonder if the French get it for cheaper.
DeleteThey do for sure. Several people I know have visited France and told me AFTER they went that French designer beauty is much more affordable there. And that something like L'Occitane is almost dirt cheap at the duty-free. I need to at least make it to one French airport in my lifetime, LOL!
DeleteDid blogger change their commenting system? I notice that you can reply now.
ReplyDeleteYep. Like we discussed on Twitter. :)
DeleteJust read your comment above, that's quite a big markup! This is a very pretty color, although that's really too bad about the tipwear. Do you 'seal'the tip of your nail with topcoat? That might help.
ReplyDeleteAnd in answer to your question, it really depends. If a lot of time has elapsed, I usually just make peace with the fact that I already decided it was a lost cause the first time around.
I mentioned that I still don't cap/seal the tip. I'm afraid of ruining the polish job since I use fast-dry top coats while the polish is still rather wet. Lazy lazy me! Need to get on it.
DeleteYour way makes for a much more relaxed living, MM. :)
Woops, I missed that! I use fast-dry topcoats too, so what I usually do is go back the second day with a non quick-dry topcoat and run the brush across each nail tip.
DeleteGreat tip! I need to remember that.
DeleteNot a huge fan of teal but liking this on the nails, looks so pretty.
ReplyDeleteI hate when products get so popular that they're sold out but I've learned that eventually they will be relaunched with another shade name.
Thanks, Monica!
DeleteI'm slowly learning that, too. But the uncertainty in the mean time is UNBEARABLE. lol
I don't have TOO many missed lemmings that I pine over (even in a mild way), but one I've been struggling with lately is Guerlain's Serie Noire Blush G - good God that blush and the not having it hurts my heart - SOO GORGEOUS!! I know that life will go on and I don't think about it constantly, but I think about it more than is reasonable for something such as a blush lol.
ReplyDeleteAs for Nirvana, I don't own too many shades like that because I always think I don't like them on my skin - but sometimes I try them on and they don't look half bad. Infinitely better on your skin, and gorgeous overall! I'm so glad you scooped it up!
!!!
DeleteYou said the name of the ONE item I AM pining over! I actually tried to get it before Christmas and there's one Shoppers that I go to that still has it in a display case. The SA got my hopes that it was still around, but then came back and said they just hadn't gotten around to changing the display. I WAS UPSET!!!
When I encounter a product I missed out on the first time around, my immediate reaction is to grab it and all the duplicates in some kind of hoarding frenzy, HAHA. Glad you finally got a hold of this :)
ReplyDeleteI try to resist those urges as much as possible... sometimes to my detriment! Thanks. :)
DeleteBeautiful photography of this luxurious shade! Well done! Glad you acquired it.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lucy! Glad you like it!
DeleteNow THAT is a stunning nail polish! LOVE it!!!! You and Larie need to stop throwing your amazing Dior polishes in my face. I already told her I surrender, you ladies win, it's time for me to indulge! ;)
ReplyDeleteOh, DID you?? Haha, I can't wait to see what your picks are! I know you go for total stunners. I'm wearing something else this week yet wish I was wearing Nirvana again, which is a great sign that I picked a keeper! You'll love Dior, Danielle -- promise! ;)
DeleteSuch a pretty teal color!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rola!
