Today's Loves

Usually I'm all about the summer heat, but lately I'm appreciating moderate temperatures. It's especially nice when a cool breeze floats into the room as you're sitting back with a coffee/tea/wine and listening to some soothing music. One of my favourite soundtracks is Jane Campion's Bright Star. John Keats is my second favourite Romantic poet (after William Blake) -- and while I wasn't crazy about the movie itself as a whole, I fell in love with the music and Keats' poetry all over again. Have a listen if you're so inclined.

I enjoyed my previous visit to Kennedy Public House so much that I went again this morning with Friend S. I ordered the same giant pulled pork-stuffed omelette called the "Wake & Bake" and took a picture this time to show you the massiveness and goodness.

And while I was reading and studying for my Shakespeare final this past week, one day I was horribly distracted by the sound of birds chirping very loudly outside the living room window. There were five of these cute little birdies crowded upon one branch in a bush right by the window while this little guy sat primly and peacefully by itself away from the others. As I watched, its eyes closed and head fell forward into the sweetest little bird nap! I had to slap both my hands over my mouth to keep from squealing in delight.

And now that the pressure of the course is off, even the weeds look beautiful and precious.

I'm also having a terrific skin week. I've been avoiding wearing makeup since I took most of this week off from work to study. Letting the skin breathe for consecutive days is probably the best thing I've done for it for years and years. For the brunch, I just groomed my brows and dabbed on a bit of cream blush.

NYC Blushable Creme Stick in Mauvin' Uptown

I love the soft, emollient texture and the buildability of the colour.

Hope you're all having a fantastic weekend. What have you been enjoying this week?

  1. God I miss pulled pork...there is simply no such thing here in Germany! That picture is mouthwatering.

    1. You're in Germany?? Well, I guess you'll have to buy some pork and make it. I'm hoping to master that by the end of the summer. :)

  2. Thank heavens NYC is not available in the Philippines.

    1. NYC is absurdly affordable! The blush was only $2 on sale.

  5. I don't know how I feel about pulled pork and eggs. Hmmmm. I like both of those things separately, but together? Also, you can make pulled pork in the slow cooker ;) I have a recipe if you are so inclined.

Also, I too love Keats. I haven't seen that movie although I've been tempted to rent it, but as I've gotten older my patience for movies has diminished. I have to confess that I am a fan of action movies and light comedies, but everything else now simply can't hold my attention. Hahahaha. Still, Keats...I think there is a youtube video out there of Cumberbatch reciting a Keats poem. Ode to a Nightingale, I think? I melted. MELTED.

    1. I wasn't sure either but they go together quite well. :) Recipe please!

You won't like this movie - too slow and mopey. There are parts and moments of it that I like but I'm not crazy about the guy playing Keats and the script is rather lackluster. And thanks for that link because now I'm a puddle and useless for the rest of the day!

    1. I should try there for dinner some time. If you go for brunch, try to get there at 10:30am-11am when they open before it gets too crowded. :)

  9. Those are the prettiest weeds I've ever seen!

I recently rediscovered the NYC Blushable Creme Stick myself and am loving it too (bought on a reader's recommendation a while ago, forgot it existed). Now if only I could get my ass around to taking photos and writing a review...

    1. Which shade did you get? It was difficult resisting picking up all of them since they were so cheap. But I have anxiety when it comes to cream products and feel the need to use them up faster. :<

    2. I have Big Apple Blush, it's a very natural-looking medium pink. I was worried that after not touching it for so long (longer than I want to publicly mention) it would be dried up but it still applies perfectly well! At least if you are worried about bacteria building up, the stick format lets you disinfect it pretty easily.

    3. Oh, who am I kidding? I'm never going to finish this thing. It's huge! lol

Big Apple Blush sounds nice. It's too bad that they're discontinued. :(

    4. Wait wait, they're discontinued now? Whyyyyy :< *mopes*

  10. I'm so sad I never got around to trying the NYC Blushable Creme sticks before they were discontinued! I always meant to, but being a huge procrastinator and always getting distracted by other beauty purchases, I put it off way too long and now it's too late :(

  11. OMG -- the BIRD NAP!!! That's the cutest; want to tickle his downy little chest! That omelette is insane! How on earth did one Liz manage to put that away? Congrats on that accomplishment, lol!

Love that blush colour - looks like it'll translate well into fall as well and kudos on giving your skin a break - I totally agree that it's the best thing you can do!

Good luck with all finals, Liz! hugs! xox

Ah, Eugenia... I'm known for being able to pack away huge meals. That omelette is nothing. ;)

Finals are over now so I get a week's break before the whole thing starts up again! Yippy! lol

  16. That omelet looks amaaaaaazing. I am so jealous. Also, I found a few colors of the Blushable Creme Sticks at the Dollar Tree the other day, so I picked up two (Big Apple Blush and Urban Spice), and like them a surprising amount! Usually cream products and me don't get along because of the whole oil-slick for a face problem I have, but these managed to survive for most of the day. The shade you got is lovely!

    1. Hurray for cream blush! I have oily skin too but don't mind that it fades a bit because it's easy to pack in your purse and touch up throughout the day. Usually I have to resist the temptation to pack it on to a whorish level.

  17. Droool that omelet! I think I'll make one for breakfast tomorrow, but it probably won't compare to the Wake & Bake. Those birds are SO CUTE aaahhhh. I have to say, you were very cheerful about the whole thing. The last time birds were chirping outside my window while I was trying to study, my first thought was 'bird pot pie.'

The blush is a gorgeous everyday color. Good job NYC!

LOL @ bird pot pie. Luckily I had already eaten lunch. And I prefer rabbit pies anyway. ;)

  19. #1- Wake & Bake is EPIC. Seriously. Second, that birdie. I just want to poke it in the chest. Or maybe nudge it a little. Is that mean?! It's only because he's so darn cute! Last, that blush is gorgeous! What a perfect little pick me up. I like going makeup free on the weekends. In fact, I have been going foundation free almost daily now. My skin loves it. Just a bit of concealer where I need and some setting powder. Done!

    1. From what I can tell, you don't need a lot (or any) foundation! If it weren't for my acne scars, I'd skip it all the time. Le heavy sighs!

It is a little mean that you want to poke the birdie but it might just peck you in response, lol. ;)

  20. I've been watching the Food Network a lot since I've been sick-I haven't been hungry so I figure I'd watch food to see if that would spark the appetite. :) That omelette looks like something from a show. YUMMMM.

  22. These were so great Liz, I would have died of delight at that little bird too, so cute!! And holy moley, that omelette looks insanely delicious and I want to recreate. right. now. Supreme envy!!! Also, I can't tell you how happy I am to hear you were having a great face week - those are the best! I know you get frustrated so it's nice to have a reprieve - perhaps going sans makeup a few times a week would be the ticket? And that blush looks lovely, what a perfect shade for Summer. All around sounds like you had a great week my dear!

    1. I'm just loving birds lately. :) It's weird because I hated them and teetered toward a bird phobia during my 20s.

So happy to know you know what I mean by a great face week! The key really is in laying off the makeup, especially now that the heat makes me sweat and oily in an instant. I've been going barefaced during weekends as much as possible and taking off the makeup as soon as I get home from work. :)

  23. I've been loving (and eating) pizza like it's going outta style! not good as it's bloody hot here and my bikini and pizza belly is not hot;)

ps: you like those NYC creme blushes? I have several that I'm not a fan of...just say the word and they are yours=)

    1. LOL! Hey, as long as pizza makes you happy, you probably look a lot hotter while looking happy and satisfied. ;D

I don't want to stockpile on any more blushes so thank you but no! I do like them very much but one is more than enough - I'll never finish it!!!

    2. that's how I like to think! my bf loves to eat pizza with me-and he says I'm hot:) (He's biased but hey I'll take it!)

ok, if you change your mind-they're yours! I have them in my blog sale but for you they'd be free-ninety-nine. It sounds better in person than in writing=)

  24. Wow, this is a perfect list. I love it. All great things, and that blush is interesting, quite interesting (taps finger on chin, very pensive thoughts...)

I have a bird friend that sings at like three in the morning. Welcome to ridiculous. I always yell and tell him cats will find him, knock it off. He never listens. Yeah, I have conversations with animals, only it's less Snow White more aluminum hat.

I now want to know what a pulled pork omelet tastes like. I tinkered with the idea, but was shot down by family members. I may do it just to see what I get.
