The idea behind this product is that it's a balm that deposits shiny colour, ranging from sheer at one swipe to almost full opacity with multiple layers. I broke my lippies ban last year and bought three on sale: Candy Apple (displayed), Tutti Frutti and Sugar Plum (sent to lovely Amy because it's her fave and I didn't like the colour on me).
Initially, I loved how Candy Apple paved the way for me to finally wear opaque red lips, which I was scared of for the longest time. Although I didn't really find it to be as deeply moisturizing as sometimes it was made out to be, the soft, balmy texture worked well with my dry lips that are prone to peeling (and subsequently picking as a way of stress relief).
THEN THIS HAPPENED.
The slanted part of the tube and the lipstick failed to align, leading to TERROR, DEVASTATION AND CONFUSION.
Undaunted, I tried to go on using it. But it smashed itself up inside the tube, outside it, over it, and finally refused to wind back down. Lately I am having some very long and tiring days on less than five hours of sleep. I needed this to perk up a wan and fatigued face. Terrible were the afternoons when I couldn't get my red lips fix.
And now this is the only face I'm making when it comes to these Revlon Lip Butters.
Yeah, some of you have tweeted me that this hasn't happened to your tubes. Others have said theirs was not all that, either. Since Tutti Frutti is showing the same disturbing symptoms as Candy Apple, I'm inclined to believe that the Lip Butters are prone to this deviant behaviour. No matter how good a product is, I won't put up with packaging flaws. And these Lip Butters were supposed to be easy to tote and reapply. There's no way I'm going to go through the trouble of depotting this and trying to use it up that way. TO THE EMPTIES - BE GONE.
Sigh. I'm sad. :-(
Purchased at Rexall.

Oh, that's sad. I only own one Lip Butter in Pink Truffle that's OK for the moment, but something similar happened to me with a YSL Rouge Volupté... the bullet separated from the tube so it won't wind back down, I have to push it (not hygienic at all). I've considered removing the lipstick to a palette, but it just makes me sad to throw away that pretty tube!
ReplyDeleteIt's not too bad on a Revlon but a YSL??? YIKES INDEED. I may de-pot expensive lipsticks like that and keep using it but it's not worth the effort for drugstore items around $5, ya know? I hate packaging flaws like this!
DeleteI think this is starting to happen to my Tutti Frutti right now! It's not nearly as bad, but it's refusing to go back down after I twist it up to use. Not cool. :(
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not. And completely unacceptable. >:(
DeleteLOL...love the lipstick face!
ReplyDeleteI have about 10 (*or so...maybe more...*) of these (which I hardly ever wear ... stupid confession) and I have to say that none of mine have ever displayed this kind of issue; can it be where you're possibly storing them that's somehow to blame? You could also have gotten a defective batch - it does happen, especially when something is this mass-produced - but no matter what, this product has got to go. Not much you could do at this point.
I think the main reason I don't wear mine, is because I've decided that I prefer my lip balm to be just a balm. Personal quirk, and maybe just a phase I'm going through, but there you have it.
I have a feeling that if you were to try to use one of yours repeatedly, the same thing will happen. Everyone's now reporting their lip butter woes to me, LOL.
DeleteI LOVED Candy Apple because it got me all warmed up to wearing opaque reds. So it has served its purpose. I just can't abide by packaging flaws though. I paid good money for it, dammit! (Even if it was just $5-7. lol)
This has happened to all 3 shades I own! Grrrrrr!
ReplyDeleteUNACCEPTABLE!!! Revlon has been making lipsticks since the dawn of ages - they need to get this corrected.
DeleteMine haven't done that but it's possibly because they're rock hard due to cold weather!! I have to say though they are not worth the hype in the slightest. The only two shades I like are candy apple and berry smoothie. The rest just weren't for me
ReplyDeleteI don't think mine had anything to do with the temperature because I always keep my makeup carefully out of the sun and never carry lippies in pockets. It didn't melt off - it simply refused to wind back down and I had to smush it to push it back into the tube. That's all Revlon and nothing to do with me (us) or the weather. :(
DeleteYup, mine also misaligned and refused to go back down! Shame really because I like the product... :/ but bad packaging is such a deal breaker.
ReplyDeleteThey made a ton of money off this and now everyone is saying theirs is broken, too. I think Revlon needs to know about this.
DeleteHuh! That's weird. None of mine have that. But, truth be told I hardly wear them. I only like the two red ones I have. Over them!
ReplyDeleteI'd be angry about this happening too! It shouldn't happen period. If there's one thing that pisses me off it's faulty packaging.
RIGHT???????? Everyone's saying theirs is like that, too. What's the point of buying lippies that can't be used properly? And it's not like this is some new brand. Revlon should know by now how to produce a good lippie.
DeleteLOL! None of mine have done that, but then again, I don't wear them nearly often enough. I used Peach Parfait quite a lot before, actually, and that one is still good... But I haven't used it in months and months...
ReplyDeleteWhere were you storing it?
My MAC Lovelorn lipstick now looks like that... but it's also 3-years-old.
I always keep my lippies upright in a small box in a drawer away from the sun and heat, or I tote it around in my makeup bag in my purse. I've never put it in a pocket or let it melt. In fact, the only reason it's all smushed up is because it didn't wind back down. That's all Revlon, not storage. >:(
DeleteGosh, that is sad indeed! I don't own any of these because 'sheer' things generally don't appeal to me. They need to have a vavavoom pigment to be worth my money, haha!
ReplyDeleteAnd so not worth breaking a spending ban for. It is like wasting your hunger on cereal :(
I tend not to buy sheer lip glosses for that reason, but I was afraid of opaque lipsticks for a long time and need the balmy feeling as well.
DeleteBut I did enjoy Candy Apple a lot and it introduced me to red lipsticks, so not a complete waste. :)
I'm actually kinda disappointed by the Revlon Lip Butters as well... I mean, I loooved them at first. But the more I wore them, the less I liked them. And now, I don't even reach for them anymore. =/
ReplyDeleteI honestly didn't have an issue with the performance of the product, but the packaging makes it impossible to invest in it again. :(
DeleteLOL Love the cartoon pics Liz - just got such a chuckle on the bus home :) AWESOME.
ReplyDeleteAs for the lip butters, I have ONE, its almost done, and while this didn't happen to mine, I'm just so eager to finish it. They are just not my thing. BE GONE indeed.
ME SO SAD BUT HAVE TO ENTERTAIN TOO (lol)
DeleteYou almost finished one? Holy crap. I'm really surprised this didn't happen to you because everyone is now telling me theirs is broken, too.
I sort of wish it broke so I could get rid of it and not feel bad LOL
DeleteHahahahaha! It might!!!
DeleteOh no--no one likes a smooshed lipstick!! :/ I only have one lip butter and haven't experienced this, but I would be SO frustrated if I did!!
ReplyDeleteAt least it's under $10 - I've heard of this happening to Burberry lipsticks and would be so pissed if that happened!
Deletei am sorry this happened to your tube. i bought 6 or 7 and luckily none of them has this problem.
ReplyDeletei don't think i would buy another lip butter anytime soon for a different reason. although i really like a couple colors from the range, the wear and the color payoffs are way too inconsistent which is annoying. ;-/
I'm getting a lot of similar comments like that now as well. Personally, I liked the wear of the Lip Butters but no point in having something I can't even USE! I'm glad I restrained myself and only got 3. lol
DeleteLOL! Best pictures ever! The lipstick part is a real bummer though :-/ I haven't had this happen to me yet, but it might be because I've left my lip butters by the wayside for a little bit. You've reminded me that I should take them out and give them some love!
ReplyDeleteDo, Dovey! And let me know if yours misperforms like this!! I'm getting so many comments about similar instances.
DeleteLOL you are so funny! My Candy Apple also melted a little and has not been aligned since summer. I think the heat did it in. My other lip butters are okay though.
ReplyDeleteMine started to misalign first and finally refused to wind down, which is what caused the smushing. It didn't melt at all because I'm really careful with my makeup storage. :(
DeleteOH NO!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCandy Apple happens to be my favourite of the bunch!!!!
PS. How are you liking Dr. BRonners???
BE CAREFUL, MARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DeleteHaha, I haven't really had time to mess with Dr. B soaps lately but so far so good! There's a post on it a few pages back with some interesting comments from other Dr. B users.
LOL I love the comic book graphics. I never liked these - I only tried one but it felt weird and not moisturizing at all, and it was so patchy and...anyway. This packaging flaw seems like it happens a lot, though - so that's not good. Haha. Oh boy.
ReplyDeleteAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE! :>
DeleteI find that the Fresh tinted balms are patchier than these, which is why I'm pissed that a perfectly good product is now going to waste because I can't freaking use it. Dumb lip butters. :(
Ahahahaha this post is amazing! I'm just loling all over the place. I've definitely had the same packaging problems, but I always get them for so cheap, and I like the color so much, that I've let it slide. But I am getting pickier in my old age, and I think I'll start the hunt for a new HG MLBB after I use up the tubes I have, because crappy packaging irks me. But Sugar Plum is just the perfect color! Sighhhh.
ReplyDeleteBut how do you even use it when it gets so messy in the tubes like that? I tried and can't deal anymore. :(
DeleteI absolutely HATE it when lip products get smushed up in the tube - such mess and waste! In all honesty I am a bit surprised it happened to the lip butter. I have one and it hasn't messed up on me so far *knocks on wood*.
ReplyDeleteI guess it can be kind of hit or miss, but an awful lot of people are having the same trouble as I did. Suxxxx. :(
DeleteThe EXACT same thing happened to me! EXACTLY! There I was, all excited about a wearable bright red when it MELTED-SMUSHED on me. It was Candy Apple-- haven't had anything like this with any other lip butters.
ReplyDeleteUgh, so sorry to hear that. I haven't tried Tutti Frutti since the summer but it was starting to not align quite well with the tube, which is how Candy Apple found its way to the empties prematurely. I'm reporting this to Revlon. They made a lot of money off of horribly packaged product. If they can redesign it properly, I'd totally buy Candy Apple again. :(
DeleteI LOLed for like 5 minutes at your sad lippie face. For serious. :P
ReplyDeleteHaha, I'm glad the sad face was entertaining! I thought of writing a mean message to Revlon with it but thought that would be overkill. ;0
DeleteI totally fell into the craze when these butters came out, and I suspect that it's the nature of the formula. I circumvent this by just screwing up the tube a teeny bit at a time. It's the only thing that's kept me from throwing these and the mini Fresh balms against a wall. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't have much patience for such defects and hold a mean grudge, LOL. I'm doing the same with the Fresh mini right now but it's a matter of time before they hit the wall. ;)
DeleteThis happened to the very first Revlon Lip Butter I ever purchased—literally five minutes after purchasing the new tube and opening it in the car on the way home from Target. Luckily, I was able to turn right around and return the product, but the same situation has happened to at least two other tubes (that I can remember; and different shades) since, several weeks/months after they were purchased. Enraging!
ReplyDeleteI give up on them. Never look twice at them in the drugstores now. It's a shame because the actual lip butter itself is pretty nice. >:(
