Things I Like A Lot #1: Owls

2013 is going to be spent finding more joy in daily living. I don't want to get sucked back into the usual route of over-analyzing, so I've decided that it might be worthwhile to spend some time listing and showcasing things I like and enjoy, ranging from weird quirks to activities to just plain old things. I'm a collector at heart and love to accumulate, but it's also an urge that must be tempered lest I go batshit insane and turn into that weird old owl lady.

BUT WAIT. TOO LATE.

"HOOT HOOT"

I was working at the bookstore the other day when a guy walked in and said he needed an owl item for a girl. I proceeded to lead him to the shelf lined with owl mugs and he mused out loud, "Why do girls love owls so much?"

My response: "Owls are great."

Him: "I don't get it."

Me: "Just look at it." [held up a mug]

Him: "..............??????"

He walked off with an owl mug and an owl tree ornament and politely declined the owl bottle opener.

The point is: I don't think it's something that can be explained. I just freaking like them and so does that lucky girl. :-)

The mug was my first purchase at the bookstore, to reward myself for working a second job.

The lip glosses were reviewed here. The journal is going to become a perfume diary perhaps, and the letter opener was a dire necessity after someone stole the regular one I had before.

"Put a bird on it," they said.

"Start an aviary on your desk," I say. Mr. Owl is now fast friends with Parrot Pen.

I beat the customers to the punch and snatched up the last owl snow globe when they went on sale. Right now my grown sister and I are fighting over who gets to keep it in her room. Obviously: me.

They're a hoot but I decided to stop with the owl madness at the snow globe. Because I'm crazy maybe but not crazy crazy. Ya know?

Hoot.

  1. Hi Liz, Happy New Year! What a fun owl anecdote and beautiful snowglobe! I love owls partially for the cuteness factor, and partially since they symbolize wisdom.

  2. HAHAHA oh c'mon, you KNOW crazy crazy is way more fun, right? Look at me bahaha!
Owls are cool. Heed my warning though: ! used to love pigs a lot. Then everybody started buying me pig this, pig that-it got TOO PIGGY around here. Had to publicly sell off the pigs to make sure everyone got the message: no more pigs. :) So yeah, good idea to stop at the globe! But you know, owls are classier than pigs so maybe a HUGE owl collection won't be so bad. You surely won't find a calendar with owls dressed up in monthly outfits like you can with pigs. See what I mean? OWLS=CLASS. :D

    1. YOUR CRAZY WAYS MAKE MY DAY. :D

I know what you mean about the pig thing. My sister collected sheep and now her house is full of them, mostly from other people. I contributed to some of that madness in the past, and even now I can't pass sheep things without wanting to pick it up for her. I don't want a huge owl collection and just because they're owls doesn't mean I want them. They have to be good-looking, hahahahaha.

Having said all this, I wish we could see your old pig collection. :)

  3. Interestingly, I have a necklace with an Owl on it and I got it because the owl looked cool. You are right about that ;) Happy New Year, Liz! :)

  4. Love this post! Nothing wrong with owls... and I'm with Tracy here. I have lots of pigs at home. Pink pigs with curly tails. Wait. They have to be fat and cute and cuddly too. Hahahah

    1. Yep, we have a standard to uphold, LOL. I prefer my owls mostly snowy white or wood or just one colour. No need to go crazy now, hahahahahaha. :D

  6. It's because owls are cute but also somehow mysterious and majestic. And obviously because they deliver mail in the wizarding world, which makes them useful as well.

I love owls but don't own a lot of owl things. Maybe I should get into this.

  7. I don't own any animal-themed objects, but if I did, they would waffle between either elephants or wolves....my two favourite animals. As to owls, I may not have the same obsession with them that you do, but I do get it; back in 2001 I went to Granby Zoo here in Quebec with my husband & daughter, and as we were leaving we passed the owl section where I totally fell in love with the smallest & absolutely cutest little owl - broke my heart to see it behind glass, but I was still thrilled to have gotten to see it up close & personal like that!

    1. I had no idea about elephants and wolves! Good to know. ;)

I've only seen owls at the zoo but I heard from a few people that they have spotted some flying around in the neighbourhood. I'd so love to see one up close. I really really want to see the wee little one you saw!

    2. Just to update, the species I saw & fell in love with that day is the Northern Saw-Whet Owl ... I urge you to google image it, but be prepared for sheer cuteness! At my country place in the Laurentian mountains, I've seen glimpses of several owl species, only quick flashes mind you, but I hear them all the time! They're a real hoot! Sorry...couldn't resist!!!

  10. This is such a fun post! Would love to see more things you like. :) I feel like I'm one of the lucky girls who didn't get into owls. I collect far too many things in the first place.

I also love penguins! They're freaking hilarious. I think it's the animal I search for the most on YouTube.

  12. Happy New Year! I love your owl collection -- especially the snow globe! Owls are definitely one of my favorite types of birds. A couple of years ago I would sometimes see wild owls in my neighborhood, which was very cool! I hope they come back to the area someday :)

    1. Happy new year, MM! I've never seen an owl aside from at zoos, but some people have told me they saw some around the neighbourhood. I've become more partial to birds as of late. It's a bit of a strange but interesting development. :)

  13. Awwww <3 lovely collection Liz! I do like owls but I admit not as much as you :) If I ever get an owl figurine, it will be the Estee Lauder solid perfume compact. There are 2 actually, one is white and another is golden (jay strongwater). Please google search and drool :D

  15. OH MY GOD OWLS. I love them too. Squirrels will always be #1 in my heart though. Your owl mug is insanely cute. And the snow globe! When I read that bit about you beating the customers to the punch, my eye skipped to 'fight' below and at first I thought you were talking about punching customers out to get to it first. hahaha I must be overestimating your love of owls. But that is one awesome snowglobe.

You're right, they are quite a hoot :P

    1. I also have a thing for squirrels but it's more of a joke between me and my mom. I call her squirrel, lol.

Oh, MM. There have been a few customers I wanted to punch but not because of the owls, hahaha! I just grabbed one during work and took it to the back to obsess over for a while before buying it. LOL

  17. Ha. Don't kid yourself - you're crazy crazy :P

Owls ARE cute! I don't own any myself - in fact I have like, next to no nic-nac's anywhere, I'm so dull - but they just have sweet faces and maybe they impart some kind of wisdom to us, who knows? I don't think I collect anything really, except makeup haha. And maybe shot glasses from places I travel LOL. What does that say about me?

    1. I think all bloggers are. ;)

You don't want to clutter up your new place with these things, so I totally get it. I have so much crap in this house, the thought of moving fills me with absolute terror. I also collect shot glasses and people bring me back shot glasses now as well, so there's THAT. I guess next time we meet, it needs to be at a tequila bar. :>
