Fancy birthday self treat with CHANEL Rouge Coco Shine 404 Sari d'Eau

About damn time I got myself a CHANEL lipstick, I thought, as my birthday approached. Thanks for the well wishes, by the way -- 'twas on the 21st. The so-called "first day of spring" is always a joke because I've cancelled many a birthday outing due to horrid weather conditions. Not so bad this year and I had a great week!

Before I could approach a CHANEL counter, however, I took an excursion to Winners as is my wont. Last month a bunch of NARS blushes, shadow duos and multiples showed up, and I barely managed to resist picking up a Pierre Hardy blush, Exhibit A and the now discontinued Sex Appeal. (Down to CAD$25 instead of the usual $33, heh.) But when I went on this pre-birthday excursion, I found a bunch of women forming a circle around the cosmetics bins and knew something even more exciting was afoot. I'm not a particularly aggressive person but sometimes I can't help myself. I had elbowed myself into the circle without even thinking about it and had a few things in my hands by the time I realized what had happened.

"There's an orange lipstick somewhere," one woman told me breathlessly.

"Yep," I replied, dangling the lipstick in my left hand.

We spoke non-verbally at that point. The look on her face: 'Holy shit, girl, you just got here.'

Me: 'Yepppppp.'

The orange lipstick in question is the CHANEL Rouge Coco Shine in 404 Sari d'Eau.

I've read a lot of favourable reviews about Rouge Cocos but never really wanted to shell out CAD$40 for a sheerer formula. I was lucky to find it for $25 at Winners. (I know this place sounds all magical to you non-Canadians, but usually it requires a lot of digging through a bunch of opened and swatched items to find things in good shape. People are gross.) Sari d'Eau contains more shimmer than I expected, but it's orange and easy-breezy-summery-looking, so I forgave it the higher price, gritty-looking shimmers and the unexpectedly strong fruity smell.

According to CHANEL and indicated by its name, Rouge Coco Shines provide "hydrating sheer lip shine." Sari d'Eau is currently available on Chanel.com but I've never seen it before at our department stores, nor do I see it online at thebay.com. I could be wrong and it might be around, but since I'm not really going to recommend this one, no point in chasing it down.

It's all down to preference at this point, of course, because we all like different things. Sari d'Eau swatches beautifully. The colour is sheer but can be built up. It's sits solidly in the orange spectrum, not leaning too cool or warm, neither too red nor too yellow. There's a soft sheen from the texture of the lipstick and an added shine from the shimmery bits.

But this ain't no low maintenance swipe-and-go lip sheer. I wanted to show you a lip swatch and quickly applied a few layers on my crusty pre-exfoliated morning lips. You won't notice this from a distance but there's all sorts of dastardly things going on -- I didn't even have to magnify this picture to an extra large size for them to be visible. Emphasizing dry bits, falling into cracks and lines -- ugh. It's not an unwearable lipstick, but I am so glad that I didn't pay full price for this. I do like this shade of soft orange but could have done with less shimmer content. There's no magic here and a part of me is relieved because I won't be running to pick up five more of these. I might test out a non-shimmery one to see if that fares better and determine whether I picked up a random bum tube, but my curiosity is satisfied for the most part. I'll be throwing my money at more Rouge d'Armanis and less Rouge Coco Shines.

CAD$39/USD$35, 3g/0.1oz. Made in France.

  1. Happy belated birthday! I have 2 rouge coco shines I really like, shame this shade isn't all that! The Armani ones sound like a worthwile investment

  2. It is a beautiful shade and suits you well being an orange with champagne shimmer!
I do agree with you on Chanel Coco Shine, though. I like them but I don't think they are amazing although I'm a fan of sheer lipsticks. I would pick Dior Addict or Shu Uemura lipsticks any day.

    1. I haven't tried any of them to make a good comparison, but I had expectations that weren't quite met. Still want to try another shade though. :)

  3. Hey Liz, this is a gorgeous shade! I'm so sorry to hear the formula leaves something to be desired though. I think there are inconsistencies within the range, which is a pity. I only have the newer ones, and they work well for me.

    1. I haven't really read about the shimmery ones in the past so it could be that their cream versions are as good as most people say - I just need to try it!

  4. Happy Belated Birthday Liz! The stuff you find at Winners ASTOUNDS me man. Ours out here SUCKS.
I have one Coco Shine-Boy, and it's not as bad as this one, although I find it a bit drying as it sure doesn't last long. Too bad about this one-it's a perfect orange shade for you!

    1. Hahahaha, thanks, Tracy! As Kate says below, I am a champion bin diver. ;)

Everyone seems to have Boy - I should try that and see how it fares.

  5. HAPPY BELATED ;)... you're right. the first day of spring is a lie. Good thing you've got a pretty spring-y lipstick to make up (makeup) for that!

    1. Thanks, birthday twin! Spring is a lie in Canada until that one week in May when it's nice and suddenly it's summer!

  6. Happy belated birthday, I hope it was lovely!!! It's quite a pretty shade, but what a pain in application. And this Winners does sound like nirvana, but is likely not as I think

    1. D!!! How have you been, girl?!?

Think of Winners like your TJ Maxx or Philene's Basement. Mostly a headache but I'm an experienced gleaner, lol.

  7. Dang your Winners is da bomb!!! Too bad this formula isn't all that but to think you found a Chanel lippie at Winners is just crazy!

    Again, happy birthday! xx :)

  8. hahahah liz for the win! a good score price-wise even if the resulting quality wasn't all there. still, now you at least one of those interlinked C's in your lipstick collection, the makeup hoarder in all of us knows that stands for something (unfortunately)

    1. Yep, need one from every range. I spent enough years on Revlons and Maybellines -- time to scale up.

  9. Happy birthday!

Don't you just love Winners? Allowing you to spend less on designer items that may or may not please you. But you're right people are gross -- I've witnessed a woman opening packages, swatching the products on her hand then leaving them out in the open. COME ON!! I did see Chanel Le Vernis polishes on my last Winners trip. Too bad none of the shades were my thing.

The colour of this Rouge Coco Shine lippie is really beautiful, it's too bad the formula doesn't work. Despite that, do you find it hydrating?

    1. Thanks, Christine!

I see a lot of people doing that at Winners. Next time I should pretend that I work there and tell them to cease immediately. >:D The worst story I heard this week was about a group of women going into Sephora and taking their socks and shoes off to conduct pedicures right there in the nail bar. EW.

The hydration is definitely there and it feels lightweight overall, but the shimmery bits have too much grit. Other than that, I think it's fine!

  10. +10 points for using the word "dastardly"! One of my faves and so underused! I'm glad you didn't pay full price since you weren't in lurve with it. I echo Tracy - I too own 1 Rouge Coco Shine in Boy and it's pretty but I don't find it hydrating at all. Happy belated birthday, Liz! <3 Hearts!

    1. I always want to say "bastardly" instead but it wouldn't be right, LOL. I need to swatch Boy -- it's the one that everyone has! Thanks, Kristen!

  11. Happy belated birthday, Liz! (I wish I had known earlier!) It's amazing what sometimes crops up at Winners. A few weeks ago, I managed to scoop a Chanel 'anti-wrinkle' cream - not for me, but my mother, who is a die-hard fan of Chanel skin care. My mom practically keeled over when I told I had gotten a jar of this cream for about a third of the retail price. I bought her a Rouge Coco Shine lipstick for Christmas - the shade was called 'Canotier', which is a pinky-nude colour with subtle shimmer. Too bad this one didn't work out, but good thing you got it at a discount!

    1. Thanks, Louise! I've seen some La Prairie creams too but they still cost quite a bit. I give skin care products to my mom all the time too. She's not big on makeup but loves a good face cream!

  12. The shade's really pretty, but it's a shame about the formula. I actually think I bought this for my mom once and I don't know how it fared after her initial thrill. She uses up all of her lipsticks but at the end there is usually a verdict, hahaha.

  13. I own one Coco Shine that I randomly found in the woods (I know - very strange. It was pretty much brand new) in the shade Monte Carlo. After wearing it a couple times, I think it's all right - but I do prefer Rouge Armani Sheers, I guess. I wouldn't purchase any more shades.

    1. Okay, literally LOL-ing because that's so random! Nice to hear some dissenting opinions on the Coco Shines. I haven't tried any Armani Sheers to compare with though - adding that to the ever growing list. :)

  14. Happy belated birthday! A birthday is always a good excuse to treat yourself :) I too only have one of these Coco Shines, though I picked up a non-shimmery one (Evasion). I'm averse to anything shimmery/glittery in my lipsticks, so I probably would've shared similar sentiments to you about this particular shade. Still, at least your curiosity about these range of lipsticks is now satiated, and you managed to nab it at a lower price than retail.

    1. Thanks - the entire month has been a big TREAT YO SELF refrain. x___x

I'm not anti-shimmer but this one's grittier than I expected from a luxury brand. Maybe it was a bum batch and that's why it ended up at Winners. Colour's still good though. :)

  15. I echo the sentiments of the previous comments and also own Chanel Boy - nothing too impressive and I too am realising that shimmers in lipsticks aren't my thing (in glosses I can handle and sometimes like) I recently picked up a regular Rouge Coco and find that infinitely better both in formula and colour. I am definitely going to use Boy up though, it has become my work colour until the tube is all gone mwuhaha

    1. Weird, right? I like shimmers in glosses but it's so tricky to pull off in lipsticks.

Double empties points for finishing up a Chanel, whoop!

  16. Happy belated birthday, Liz! What an amazing find. I am astounded by your bargain hunting skills. I wish there were such bins in Japan. There are sale bins in Australian drugstores which I look through whenever I visit the in-laws but only separated, crusty old L'Oreal, Maybelline, Revlon stuff could be found haha... I have Coco Shine Rouge Allure in Boy and while I like the shade, the formula is a bit weird. I feel like I have to really layer it on to get some colour and it has a slightly tacky feel to it, unlike other lippies in my collection.

    1. Thanks, YM! I've gotten ridiculously good at it. Bargain hunting for clothes tires me out but I can do it for makeup all day long. :) There's a lot of crap to weed through here as well but I seem to have developed an instinct for seizing the good stuff, lol. Damn, now I feel like the only person who doesn't own Boy.

  20. Super bummed out that this is a subpar formula, because the shade is AWESOME and awesome for you, Liz...and damn it, I live in Canada and I'm in awe of your magical Winners, ours are not even close to that here!!! When I found that butter London polish last month I was shocked. I really should check out the wares there more often, maybe I'll get as lucky as you one day...

    1. Maybe things will get better there and the Butter London appearance is a sign! I can't fathom how the non-Toronto Winners sell anything if they're are as bad as everyone says. LOL

  21. Happy belated birthday!
It's really too bad that this lipstick is so sheer and emphasizes lines :( The shade looks so pretty! I still haven't bought any Chanel lipsticks for some reason, even though I'm always pining over them. I will know to stay away from this one though.

    1. Thanks, Marianna!

I could be less lazy and exfoliate my lips properly. Even so, the grit from the shimmery bits are a bit much for me. I'm still willing to give another shot to Coco Shines though. Will try a non-shimmery one next time. :)

  22. I have a few Chanel Rouge Coco Shines and I don't find that I have the problem you do with the emphasizing lip texture. Maybe it's just the colours I have? I don't have any with shimmer, to be fair... I think this one looks fantastic on you, though, despite the dry lines and whatnot. :P I love this formula BECAUSE it's semi-sheer. Sometimes I don't want to wear a full-fledged lip colour because I just want a wash of colour for those "low-key" looks. I pretty much exclusively wear these types of lipsticks on my days off, lol.

    1. It could vary by shade, or maybe this one ended up at Winners because it was a defect. (In which case, UGH.) I'll have to give these another try at the counters. Sometimes I feel like this sort of sheer formula is exactly what I need, and other times I feel like they're a total waste of money. TORN, DENISE, TORN!

  26. i find that the shimmer in some chanel lip things make my lips look like poo lol. but yeah i have dryness so i imagine people with pretty lips are probably fine and their lips don't look like weird peely wrinkly things. i tried a rouge coco shine once ages ago i think and i think i thought it was dry/too expensive?? Anyway, i hope you can try one of the not shimmery shades and it is better!
